A suspicious package addressed to Secretary-General Kofi Annan caused a sudden alert by security forces at the U.N. Earth Summit on Wednesday.

The New York fire department, police bomb squad, U.S. Secret Service and a joint terrorism task force were all alerted.

A U.N. spokesman said the package contained a bottle with about 2 ounces of colorless liquid whose chemical formula was analyzed as 90 percent water, 9 percent ethyl-alcohol and 1 percent spearmint.
