@ScottHech In NY, there is no way to waive automatic court fees if you are poor & cannot afford them. Only choices are (1) Ask for “civil judgment†which acts as a lien on your credit for 7 years or (2) Ask for time to pay & if you can’t pay, a warrant issues for your arrest. Change needed.

@DrRJKavanagh It costs NYC, $2,000 to arrest someone. It costs them $500 per night to jail them on Rikers Island.
If someone is sentenced to 60 days in jail because they didn't pay a $2.75 subway fare, it costs the city, $22,000.

@BenjaminDictor At-will employment of editorial employees is a restraint on the freedom of the press. Editorial independence requires, at minimum, job security and living wages. A unionized newsroom is an important first step. #WorldPressFreedomDay

@BenjaminNorton A hero in California spray-painted “Yemen†in blood red on the main sign for the office of death profiteer Lockheed Martin. He added “8-9-18,†the date when Saudi dropped a Lockheed bomb on a school bus, killing 44 children.
He faces a *felony* charge now

@ScottHech Disgusting. Staten Island DA requests pretrial detention. Then offers a plea w/ 6 months on Rikers for theft of a *sandwich & juice.
Jail will: A) Devastate him; B) Exacerbate his poverty; & C) Cost NY taxpayers ~$144,000.
Think about how many hungry people that $$ could feed.

@DKThomp This is a brutal statistic about nonprofits saving the news:
"Between 2010 and 2015, foundations gave $80 million to local and state nonprofit news orgs ... less than one one-100th of the $8.3 billion in revenue that newspapers lost during that time."

@asharma NYT, WSJ and WaPo are converting a much larger share of readers into digital subscribers than local news chains like Gannett — one reason for the growing gap between haves and have-nots in American journalism.
